The Chestnut Festival
Soriano's Chestnut Festival ( Sagra delle Castagne ) is held during the first two weeks of each October. This is considered among the best festivals in Italy. During the two weeks of the festival, Soriano divides into 4 districts (Contrade), which are at war with one another. The town reverts to its medieval roots. During the festival, open air restaurants are erected, free roasted chestnuts are found all over town, there are parades, sword fights, and much more. It all builds up to the main event, called the 'Palio', which is a series of games (archery, jousting, etc). Each of Soriano's Contrade (Districts) is represented in the games, and the winning Contrada celebrates victorious at the end of the festival. Soriano fills up during the festival, attracting visitors from all over the world. This is a huge event.
