This festival was officially recognized by Pope Bonifacio IX in 1396.
It separates the twon into 7 different 'Contrade' (Districts) The town is subdivided into seven Contradas (districts) celebrate Saint Egidio for eight days per year, beginning August 31st. Each day, the festival is passed to one of the seven Contradas.
The festival boasts music, theater, food stands, and taverns.
On the first Sunday in September, all of the the Contradas meet in Piazza Santa Maria to compete against one another in the Palio challenge.
On the second Sunday in September, they meet for a Palio of the Archers
Through the festival, townspeople dress in period costumes, participate in parades and much more.
