Some people think that while in a foreign country, if they leave the traditional tourist areas, they will have a difficult time getting services, or they may be at some risk. This could not be any further from the truth. Finally, there is the concern of communication problems.
With respect to services, Italy is at the same time an extremely ancient, yet modern land. The smaller towns not only have all of the same services you would find in a larger city (with the exception of subways), but you will often find easier access to them. Within a few hundred feet of your home, you will have restaurants, coffee bars, first aid, doctors, a pharmacy, markets, a bus stop, parking, gas stations, and much, much more. Within a few miles you have a train hub, major supermarkets, a mall, and much more. Finally, you are only an hour from Rome, Italy's largest city.
With respect to risk, you are far safer in a small town than in the city. Pickpockets, purse snatchers, con artists, and dishonest businesspeople looking to make a quick buck off of unsuspecting tourists are commonplace in the tourist-ridden cities. These things are virtually unheard of in a place like Soriano. Instead of being a target, you will be a welcome guest to the people around you. It makes a huge difference.
With respect to communication problems, it is true that you will find English more spoken in the tourist-ridden areas. To them, it is a question of business necessity. In Soriano, you will find that most people don't speak English. However, the people that matter will speak enough to communicate with you. Refreshingly, they are generally very eager to speak with you. For example, the restaurants are used to English speaking people, and have no trouble. Most storekeepers speak enough to make a transaction, and we will certainly make sure you know people that speak well enough if there should be any problems. Most people actually prefer this over being in a place where everyone speaks 'tourism english'.
