When we have very early flights out of Rome, we usually stay at the Airport Hilton the night before our departure.  It is right at the terminals, so the walk from checkout of the hotel to airline check-in is about 5 minutes.  Alternatively, there is a Marriott about 1 mile from the airport, and a Sheraton about 10 minutes away that we have stayed at.  They both have shuttles.  They are typical Hilton/Marriott/Sheraton hotels, and are fairly pricey, especially in the summer.  I've stayed in all of them, and prefer the Hilton, mostly for the sake of convenience. Here is some information on them:

Hilton Rome Airport --- Click to check rates

Hotel Information:

A very typical Hilton in just about every way. The huge benefit to this hotel (and the only thing that might warrant the price) is the fact that it is on airport grounds. The airport has a network of sky bridges that connect the terminals, parking, car rentals, etc. The Hilton is right in the middle of all of it, so when you are ready to leave the hotel and go to the terminal, you simply step out of the hotel and take a brief walk (never more than a few minutes) to the check-in desks.

The rooms are typical Hilton rooms. They have room service, min bar, Satellite TV, Internet, etc. Keep in mind that the prices are extremely high for the mini bar, room service and Internet. Other hotel features include 2 restaurants, a bar, an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, two tennis courts, and tons of meeting space.

They do offer a shuttle service to the terminals, but you are probably better off just walking. One nice feature is that they offer a free shuttle to downtown Rome for sightseeing.

Our Experience Here:

We have stayed here many, many times. When we have early morning flights back to the states, we try to stay here instead of making the hour drive from Soriano. It is expensive, but we have always valued every extra minute of sleep before the 17 hour trip back to Los Angeles. To be honest, the only Hotel amenities we have ever taken advantage of are the beds. We usually get here pretty late after dinner, go straight to bed, then shower and leave in the morning. While we keep coming back, it is strictly because of the fact that it is on airport grounds and we know the beds are comfortable.

Courtyard by Marriott Rome Airport --- Click to check rates

Hotel Information:

This Marriott is just under 3 miles away from the airport, and is generally less expensive than the Hilton. It is a very typical Marriott. The rooms are nice and clean, of course, and you will be hard pressed to find anything but Americans staying there.

All rooms have Satellite TV, Internet, mini bars, room service, and safes. Other hotel features include a gym, pool, meeting rooms, and a restaurant.

They have a shuttle that runs to the airport frequently, but they do charge for the shuttle service. The hotel is close to the town of Fiumicino, so there is no shortage of restaurants. Keep in mind, however, the the town of Fiumicino is a modern port town which isn't that nice in terms of beauty.

Nearby attractions are:

Ostia Antica - The ancient Roman Port Ruins - 3 miles
The Roman Ship Museum - 2 miles
Central Rome: 16 miles

Our Experience Here:

We have stayed here twice. It is cheaper than the Hilton, and I would argue that it is a bit nicer. Still, I really like the fact that the Hilton is on airport grounds because all I am doing is sleeping the night there. Based on that fact alone, this is my second choice.

Sheraton Roma --- Click to check rates

Hotel Information:

This is a good in-between place. It is only 12 miles from the airport, and about 5 miles from city center. What is nice is that it is right outside of Rome, just off of the freeway that takes you to the airport, so it only takes about 20 minutes to get to the terminals. It is a beautiful Sheraton with a wonderful circular pool and very nice outdoor bar. This is more of a resort style hotel that offers just about everything.

Our Experience Here:

We haven't stayed here for more than 20 years, so any opinion we have of the rooms would be very outdated. But as a matter of trivia, my very first night in Italy back in 1983 was here. We did spend an evening with some friends at the bar by the pool recently, and it was very beautiful... ad the Mojitos were good, too :-).

Other Hotels

Of course, there are many other hotels in the area of the Rome Fiumicino Airport, but the above hotels are the ones that we have stayed at. When it comes to that last night before we leave for the States, we tend to want a guarantee that we will have a good room, so I usually end up with one of the large chains as you see above for that one night. However, if price is a larger concern for you, there are many less expensive hotels in the area. The link below will take you to a Hotels.com listing of the hotels in the vicinity of the airport, sorted by distance.
