While you are in Italy, you may want to see Venice, The Dolomites, Lake Como, etc. These are among the very few popular destinations that are not in 'day trup' range from Soriano, as they are far north. I have been asked if it is best to fly, or take the train.
I strongly urge the train for several reasons:
No time savings with air
Suppose you want to go to Venice. You would drive to the Rome Airport, get there the minimum 2 hours before the flight, wait to take off, fly, get off the plane, wait at baggage claim, and find transportation to Venice. All in all, you will be wasting about 6 hours for the trip, and it will be a huge Hassle.
With the train, you can continue to use Soriano as your base very easily. Simply drive 15 minutes to the Orte Train Station, park, and board the train. The trip is 5 hours, so you will have saved no time by flying,a dn you will have had far less hassle witht he train.
The View
When you are taking the train up north, you will be looking out the widow at some of the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen. The train is a tour in and of itself, and should never be discounted as part of the experience.
Cost
While this may or may not be important to you, the cost of first class train travel is about 1/3 of coach travel in an airplane.
